ไซยาไนด์ (CN) เป็นสารที่อันตรายร้ายแรงมาก ออกฤทธิ์ยั้งเอ็นซัยม์ Cytochrome C Oxidase หรือ Complex IV ใน electron transport chain ใน mitochondria นำมาซึ่งการทำให้เซลล์ไม่อาจจะทำ oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) เสมอเหมือนขาด oxygen รุนแรงในระดับเซลล์ทั้งที่ oxygen ในเลือดธรรมดา

ปริมาณ CN ขนาดจนตาย (lethal dose) ต่ำมาก กินไม่ถึง 200mg หรือหายใจเอาแก๊สเข้มข้นเพียงแค่ 270 ppm (หนึ่งส่วนในล้านส่วน) ก็จบเห่ อาการผู้ได้รับ CN จะราวกับคนสลบหัวใจหยุดเต้นเฉียบพลันเนื่องจากว่าอวัยวะทั่วร่างขาดออกสิเจน เลือดเป็นกรดรุนแรง
